Northern promiscuous pea.jpeg
Northeast Participatory Seed Catalog African Pea "Promiscuous Mix"

African Pea "Promiscuous Mix"

$5.00

Vigna unguiculata

Life cycle: annual

Also known as Southern pea, this hearty, nutritious bean has a long history beginning with cultivation in Africa and arriving in the US via the transatlantic slave trade. This particular mix is the result of a collaboration between Yanna Fishman and Chris Smith of the Utopian Seed Project with additional genetics from Joseph Lofthouse. It comes to us from Freed Seed Federation making it the beginnings of a northern strain of “promiscuous” peas, meaning they are prone to crossing with multiple individuals and will readily adapt to your farm or garden. No matter the form they take they will give you a delicious pot of beans once dried.

Growing conditions: Plant in full sun to part shade, in poor to medium quality soil. Give them plenty of room to spread out and provide a trellis for vertical support. To harvest for dry peas leave pods on the vine until they become dry and papery.

Sowing instructions: Direct seed at 1” depth and plant about 6” apart. Wait until several weeks after the last possible frost to ensure the soil has had time to warm up.

Stewardship chain: Grown by Freed Seed Federation

Lot number: FSF2502

94% germination rate

Minimum 25 seeds per packet
