Our Seed Work
We believe in stewarding the genetic diversity of plants native to where we grow and the genetic diversity of vegetables, fruits, and flowers. We believe in this so much that we now host The Northeast Participatory Seed Catalog.
The PURPOSE of the Northeast Participatory Seed Catalog is to make open-pollinated, genetically diverse, and regionally adapted fruit, vegetable, and flower seeds available to growers of all types in the northeastern US .
Our MISSION, as a land care company curating and supporting a seed catalog, is to integrate interesting and unique seeds into our landcare practices; perpetuate the culture and activities of high quality seed production and saving activities amongst farmers and gardeners in the northeastern US; and to model participatory production practices that financially benefit the grower and distributor equally.
Our VISION is that we accomplish this by building a robust and competitive seed retail and wholesale catalog of seeds exclusively grown in New England and New York.
We view our role as making it easy for regional growers to engage in seed contracts and make it easy for their seed to be distributed regionally to home gardeners, market growers, farmers, and seed libraries. We do this by receiving open-pollinated, untreated seed from other growers and native plant enthusiasts. We also produce some of our own seed on leased land in Essex, Massachusetts.
Our ACTIVITIES in this effort are:
Distributing locally/regionally grown seed to producers and consumers.
Capturing and sharing the stories of the varieties in the catalog through social media and on our website.
Integrating regionally adapted and grown seeds into our landcare practice, and supporting other landcare professionals to do the same.
Supporting seed producers through contracts and a 50/50 grower-seller/distributor split of gross revenue.
Building our organization’s network of seed producers and growers based on reciprocity and camaraderie.
We believe these activities will help us achieve our vision of a robust and dynamic regional seed catalog that entices and engages growers of all types to purchase from and submit to its offerings.
Our Partners in Seed
We work with an eclectic set of gardeners, growers, and farmers to offer an array of open-pollinated, (certified and uncertified) organically grown seed throughout New England and New York. They vary from folks who collect from plants growing wild to folks running certified organic farming operations for whom seed is a secondary source of income.
