What are we looking for?Open-pollinated, unique seed grown anywhere in the northeastern US, specifically New England, New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania. Who are we hoping to work with?Seed producers for whom germination testing, packaging, marketing, distributing, and — to potentially some extent, cleaning - is a burden or set of tasks they’d rather defer. How are we paying seed producers?Depending on the seed and the grower’s needs or interests, we split gross revenue 50%/50% from selling any particular variety. Because our primary source of revenue is land care services, we have the capacity to grow seeds out and sell seedlings or mature plants at retail prices. In instances when seed has not sold prolifically or generated much revenue, we can grow these out and then send royalties (15-30% of retail price of selling live plants) to the original seed producer. Why are we doing this?We want regionally grown and adapted seed readily and easily accessible to anyone who’d like grow these varieties. We also believe in integrating seed into our landcare maintenance practices, and we’d like to be utilizing regionally grown and adapted seed. We send you a package in the mail that includes a form and supplies to appropriately package and mail your seed to us.
We receive the seed, weigh it, and then send out a representative sample to undergo laboratory testing to determine germination rate.
Once we receive the germination rate from the lab, we confirm whether or not the seed meets germ requirements for retail sales. If seeds don’t meet federal and state germination requirements for wholesale and retail sales, we explore whether or not it’s an appropriate fit for our upcoming virtual seed library and will attempt to distribute the seed through active seed libraries unless the grower would prefer to pull the seed entirely. If seeds meet germ requirements, they are added to our online seed catalog.
Sales per variety are reviewed quarterly, at which point percentages of gross revenue are distributed to growers either by bank check/money order or an electronic payment method.
